Manager checklist

The following checklist is intended to guide managers on the review of image accessibility. It should be used during the review phase to ensure compliance of all images on the site.

IMG_A1:

Do ALL images have an ALT attribute?

IMG_A2:

Do images that convey no information, e.g. spacer or decorative images, have an empty ALT attribute?

IMG_A3:

Does an image next to a text link (with the same target location) have an empty ALT attribute?

IMG_A4:

Does a set of grouped images e.g. star images used to indicate a rating, have only one ALT attribute (i.e. one image has an ALT and the other ALT attributes are empty)?

IMG_A5:

Is the image ALT attribute descriptive?

IMG_A6:

Does the ALT attribute accurately describe the image or convey the image purpose?

IMG_A7:

Is the ALT attribute correct (i.e. does not consist only of a filename e.g. “image.jpg”, “spacer.gif”)?

IMG_A8:

Is the ALT attribute correct (i.e. does not include the words “image”, “photo” or “graphic”)?

IMG_A9:

Are company logo image ALT’s correct (i.e. the ALT can include the word “logo”)?

IMG_A10:

Is the ALT attribute correct (i.e. does contain copyright, figure or author information)?

IMG_A11:

Is the ALT attribute for non-decorative images correct (i.e does not contain only whitespace e.g. " ".)?

IMG_A12:

Is the ALT attribute device independent (i.e. does not contain words such as “click”?

IMG_A13:

Is the ALT attribute correct (i.e. does not contain information that is not conveyed by the image)?

IMG_A14:

Is the ALT attribute different to the caption if a caption is provided?

IMG_A15:

Is the image caption located near the image?

IMG_A16:

Is all text on the image included in the ALT attribute?

IMG_A17:

Is the ALT attribute concise?

IMG_A18:

Do complex images (e.g. diagrams) meet ALL the following requirements: Is there a long description as part of the page content?Is the long description (or a link to it) near the image?Is the long description referred to in the ALT attribute?Is the long description equivalent to the complex image?Is the long description marked up as text (i.e. the LONGDESC attribute is not used)?

Are ALL image maps client-side (i.e. <IMG SRC… USEMAP="#map">)?

IMG_A20:

Do all areas on an image map have an appropriate ALT attribute?

IMG_A21:

Has MATHML been used for mathematical equations (i.e. not images of formula)?

IMG_A22:

Is any information conveyed by an image presented in a way that is not reliant on colour alone?

IMG_A23:

Does each individual image in an image gallery describe in detail the content of the image?
